A Letter from Your Dog: We Need to Talk!

Dear Human,
It’s me—your dog! I’ve been meaning to have a little chat about our walks. Don’t get me wrong—I love them. The smells! The squirrels! The breeze in my fur! But sometimes, I think we could both enjoy them more if we worked on our leash manners together.
Here’s what I’ve noticed: when I pull, you pull back. Then I pull harder. Before we know it, we’re playing a very confusing game of tug-of-war that neither of us asked for. I’m not trying to drag you; I’m just excited! But when the leash goes tight, it feels like you’re saying, “Move faster!” even though that’s not what you mean.
Here’s what would help me understand better:
Use your feet, not your arms. When I stay close and the leash stays loose, that’s when we move forward.
Reward the good stuff. If I check in with you, walk beside you, or keep that leash slack—say “Yes!” or give me a treat. I’ll think, “Oh! This is what makes the walk fun.”
Keep it interesting. Let’s stop to sniff. That’s how I read the news! You check your phone; I check the fire hydrant.
Loose leash walking is about teamwork and connection. When you’re relaxed, I relax. When you lead with clarity instead of tension, I’ll happily walk beside you. Thanks for listening, Human. Let’s make our walks something we both look forward to every day.
With love, licks, and at least one perfectly timed zoomie,
Your Canine Companion
