While you’re lighting up the skies with celebration, your dog might be preparing for what they’re convinced is the literal apocalypse.

At Canine Companion Consulting, we care deeply about your dog’s emotional and physical safety. So here are our top tips to help your dog this "holiday."

1. Potty Break Before the Madness

Get your pup out early for their bathroom break. Once the bangs begin, many dogs are too scared to go out, or worse, they might bolt mid-potty.

2. Create a Safe, Quiet Hideout

Find a cozy, enclosed space away from windows, like a closet, bathroom, or quiet bedroom. Close the blinds, soften the lighting, and let your dog settle into their “den.” Their favorite comfy bed and enrichment toys can be present.

3. Mask the Noise with Low Frequencies

Turn on calming music, a box fan, or a white noise machine. The deeper the tones, the better;  they help buffer the sharp cracks of fireworks.

4. Offer Comfort Without Reinforcing Fear

Yes, it’s OK to comfort your dog! You’re not “rewarding” fear — you’re showing them they’re not alone. Sit with them, talk calmly, and let them lean on you if they want to.

5. Seek Out Your Veterinarian’s Guidance

For sound-sensitive dogs, medication can be a game-changer. Talk to your vet now.  Create a plan. There are safe options that can help reduce anxiety and keep your dog calm.

6. Make Sure Your Dog Has ID Tags

Double-check that your dog is wearing up-to-date ID tags and has a microchip registered to your current contact info. July 4th is the top day of the year for dogs going missing. Don’t take chances.
